I would like to know is there any limitation to the size of data file of SQL
Server 2000 Personal Edition. Just like the MSDE, the data file size cannot
be greater than 2GB (From memory) ?No there is no limitation.
But there is limitation on RAM usage

Hi, i'm using SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with advance services. Created a small database with 21 tables and 66 simple stored procedures. The database should not take up huge data in a short period of time. However, when i right click and check out the Database Properties, i noticed that the database size has grown to 1700 MB and available space is only about 0.9 MB. But when i locate the respective .mdf and .ldf file file, the file size of mdf is only about 4000KB and ldf file is about 1,650,000 KB.

I understand that SQL Server Express Edition allows up to 4GB of data file for each database created. But i'm puzzled and would like to know what is actually meant by the databse size and available space that i see via Database Properties. It seems worrying. Can anyone guide me? Thx in advance.

It sounds like your database is running in Full Recovery Model, and your transaction log (the ldf file) is growing. If so, you need to periodically back up your transaction log, which will allow it to release space internally. Then you will need to shrink the transaction log file to get the space back externally.

If you are running in Simple Recovery Model, then you may have a problem with an open transaction.

Database Service Won't Start

We have multiple instances at Windows 2000 Advanced Server. One default
database is Enterprise Edition and another two instances are Developer
Editions. They have been running fine until recently.
We can start ANY ONE instance from the EM, only ONE. None of any other
services can be started anymore. Not even SQL Agent. We have to start
rest of other database services and sql agent from command line.
When we try to connect the SQL Server or Agent from the EM, we got
"Error 1053 - (The service did not respond to the start or control
request in a timely fashion) occured while performing this service
operation on the MSSQL service."
Thought maybe some corrpution to currnet databases, DLL etc. Installed
another new instance on the server, got the same error message.
Verified Microsoft KB article 322140, does not seem apply to us.

2005 express on the same drive.
So when I installed it on separate drives, no problems faced yet :)

Hi All,
Being small, we have only one database server that serves our need (SQL
2000 Enterprise Edition). We never had any replication or mirroring.
Now we will be installing SQL 2005.
I was asked to look into the best way of creating a good database
server so that we will not have any downtime.
At the present if we need to stop/restart or something goes wrong with
the server, then we loose many working hours sometimes even a few days.
Could you please point me the right direction (articles, web link) so
that I can see an example of good database server layout?

amount of administrative effort would have to be mirroring. THe SQL Native
Client monitors the server status and fails over automatically for you and
your applications can continue working without have to re-establish
connection again of having to wait for failovers to complete. We tested
mirroring extensively and achieved failover in 5 sec, MS claim u can be up
and running on the mirror instance in 3 sec.

Database schema comparison

Hello all. I am using Sql Compact Edition for a small standalone application, I create and build the initial database schema on initial startup. What I am looking for is a way to upgrade the software and on initial startup of the new version, I would like it to compare the existing database with a new schema and then update the database based on the difference. This way I can have a version that will update the database without me having to know what version it is to begin with. Is there a way to do this or am I asking too much?

This is something you will have to code yourself, however the key to doing this is to tap into the INFORMATION_SCHEMA views in SQL Compact Edition.

You can get metadata about all aspects of the schema of a SQL CE/SQL Mobile database using this view and then make determinations about old vs new schema as you compare two database versions. Books Online covers the INFORMATION_SCHEMA view and what it contains.

Database resource won't start after changing cluster subnet

I'm running a SQL Server 2000 SP4 2-node active/acitve cluster on
Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition SP1. I changed the subnet mask
of my public network config, as well as the MCS virtual subnet and two
database resource subnets (all are using the same subnet). DNS is
correctly resolving to the IP addresses for all cluster resources. I
have two databases on this cluster. After changing the subnet, the
first one starts correctly on both nodes. The second one fails to
start at the SQL Server resource on node 1, but starts correctly on
node 2. I've included the three major application log errors below.
Before I start troubleshooting any further, I'm looking for any
suggestions. Does anyone know if running the SQL Server installation
advanced options mode would make any difference? Could a machine
reboot be necessary?
